The Bhogapuram International Airport (officially the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport) has transitioned into its final countdown phase as of January 2026. The project is currently a focal point for infrastructure and real estate in Andhra Pradesh.

## Major Milestones (January 2026)
Successful Test Flights: On January 4, 2026, the airport achieved a major milestone with the landing of its first commercial validation flight. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu arrived on an Air India flight from New Delhi to personally oversee the technical success.


Follow-up Trials: Subsequent validation flights were conducted on January 13 and 14, 2026, to test navigational aids, communication systems, and air traffic control synchronization.

Official Opening Date: The airport is officially scheduled to be inaugurated on June 26, 2026. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to lead the inauguration ceremony.


## Project Status and Specifications
The airport is being developed by GMR Visakhapatnam International Airport Limited (GVIAL) and has reached near-completion:

Construction Progress: Approximately 97-98% of the work is complete. The 3.8 km runway and operational systems are fully ready, with only minor civil works and terminal interior finishing currently underway.


Interior Design: The terminal will feature Mogulu art (traditional Andhra style) and is designed for high functionality with AI-based queue management and energy-efficient systems.

Capacity: In its first phase, the airport will handle 6 million passengers annually, with long-term plans to scale up to 18 million.

## Strategic Impact
The "Flyover" Road: To support the airport, the VMRDA is fast-tracking eight arterial roads and a dedicated 6-lane beach road to ensure seamless connectivity from Visakhapatnam city.

Police Presence: The state government has recently approved a dedicated police station at the airport to manage protocol, traffic, and security for travelers.

Cyclone Resilience: A unique feature highlighted this year is the airport's ability to withstand severe cyclones with wind speeds of up to 275 kmph.
